Moving Bodies

"Friends help you move, real Friends help you move bodies"
A bumper sticker I saw years ago, but it got me thinking. Not the moving bodies part, but the "Real" friends part. In your darkest moments, when things seem to be at their worst, how many real friends are there for you? If you say three or more, you're blessed. one or two, very lucky. Real friends are among the rarest of life's benefits. Someone who is always there. When you lose a job, experience a breakup, have a loved one pass away... who is there for you? Not to make it all better, not to make the pain go away, or even to loan you money - although that would help in many circumstances. Just to be there. To listen, to hold a hand, to have a few beers with. to simply be there. There are three things in my life that I value more than anything else. Family, friends and my personal experiences. Family is automatic. You have it at birth or by marriage, and hopefully, they are always there when you need them. Personal experiences are yours for the taking. You decide what you do, when you do it, where you do it. A conscious decision for the most part, although some are thrust upon you. Friends are much more random. At least at the beginning. A new neighbor moves in, a classmate sitting next to you in sixth grade, or just a chance meeting at the grocery store. What ever the case, you meet. You may have a lot in common, you may not. You talk. You discover things about each other, and a friendship is born. You don't decide that this person is now my BFF, it simply evolves over time. You start confiding in them, telling them things you rarely discuss with anyone. You offer a hug when it's needed. You call them first with any exciting news in your life. With any luck, years later, that's still the way it is. A best friend. People say that quite often, but don't quite realize what an honor that can be. Best. Don't bestow that title lightly. You're saying that that person treats you better than anyone else in your life. Make sure you absolutely mean it. So when you reach for the phone to get help moving that body (figuratively, of course), consider yourself lucky to have that person in your life. I know I do.
